Understanding ROI

Return on Investment (ROI) measures how much profit you make relative to your investment. It answers: "For every dollar I invest, how much profit do I make?"

ROI Formula: (Net Profit ÷ Total Investment) × 100 = ROI %

Why it matters: ROI helps you evaluate which products, campaigns, and investments are worth your time and money. A 50% ROI on a $1,000 investment means you make $500 profit. Always compare ROI across different investments to allocate resources wisely.

Basic ROI Calculator

(Net Profit ÷ Investment) × 100 = ROI %

Initial cost (inventory, advertising, equipment, etc.)
Revenue or selling price you received
Investment: $0.00
Final Value: $0.00
Net Profit/Loss: $0.00
ROI: 0%
Healthy ROI: 20%+. Excellent ROI: 50%+. Anything below 0% is a loss.

ROI Examples for Online Sellers

Example 1: Amazon Product Launch

  • Investment: $5,000 (inventory + launch PPC)
  • Revenue: $12,000 (over 6 months)
  • Net Profit: $7,000
ROI = ($7,000 ÷ $5,000) × 100 = 140% ✓ EXCELLENT
Annualized ROI = ~280% (if this continues)

Example 2: PPC Advertising Campaign

  • Investment: $2,000 (Amazon Ads spend)
  • Revenue: $6,000 (from ads)
  • Net Profit: $2,500 (after COGS/fees)
ROI = ($2,500 ÷ $2,000) × 100 = 125% ✓ GOOD
Every $1 spent = $1.25 profit (25¢ return per dollar)

Example 3: Shopify Store Investment

  • Investment: $8,000 (store setup, domain, initial inventory)
  • Revenue (Year 1): $18,000
  • Net Profit (Year 1): $4,000
ROI = ($4,000 ÷ $8,000) × 100 = 50% ✓ ACCEPTABLE
Payback period: 24 months (reasonable for new store)

Critical ROI Insights

  • Compare ROI across products: Always allocate resources to your highest-ROI products first.
  • Include ALL costs: COGS, fees, PPC, shipping—everything reduces your net profit and ROI.
  • Negative ROI kills businesses: If your investment loses money (-ROI), stop investing and investigate.
  • ROI vs payback: High ROI is meaningless if payback takes 3 years. Watch both metrics.
